Welcome to Wollongong

We are a coastal city with a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere and incredible natural surroundings.

The beaches are stunning - perfect for swimming, walking, or just sitting back and enjoying the view - and the escarpment adds this dramatic backdrop that makes the whole area feel peaceful and grounded.

Wollongong sits on Dharawal Country, the Traditional Custodians of this land. Their connection to Country is felt in the landscape, and it adds a richness to the experience of being here.

The city has a creative energy with galleries, live music, and community events happening regularly. It’s easy to get around, and everything feels close - whether you’re heading to the beach, exploring the Botanic Garden, or just enjoying a quiet moment by the ocean. It’s the kind of place that makes you slow down, breathe deeply, and really enjoy where you are.

This video from @BigAustralia showcases what we have to offer.

The video shows sweeping aerial views of Wollongong’s coastline and beaches, framed by the Illawarra escarpment. Waves crash onto the shore, surfers ride the breaks, and coastal walks wind through rainforest and clifftops. Scenes shift to Wollongong city and the University of Wollongong’s Innovation Campus, set on the waterfront. People walk through the grounds, with modern buildings, open spaces and ocean views creating a striking setting. The film highlights the Illawarra’s mix of natural beauty, community life and research excellence, ending with a sunset over the Pacific Ocean. Background music plays throughout, with no spoken narration.
